Monk

Laura Fullerton

In the world of wellness, Laura Fullerton is making waves with her innovative approach to cold water therapy. 'I was hooked after my first plunge,' she recalls. 'The soaring endorphins and mental clarity were second to none, and as a stressed founder, they became my ultimate 'reset button.'

Laura's background

Laura grew up in the countryside in West Sussex, where she developed a passion for health and fitness. Her entrepreneurial journey began with a health and fitness subscription box, but it was her discovery of cold water therapy that led her to create Monk. 'I nearly joined the tens of thousands of people converting chest freezers into DIY ice baths, but I kept thinking, 'There has to be a better way.'

More about Monk

Monk is making cold water therapy accessible, data-driven, and beautifully designed. 'We've created the world's first smart ice bath and app, transforming a niche biohacking practice into a mainstream wellness solution,' Laura explains. Monk's key differentiator is its data-backed approach to cold water therapy, providing personalized health journeys that go far beyond the product itself.

Key challenges

Laura's biggest challenge was in R&D, designing a product that had never been built before. 'We've spent nearly three years developing Monk to ensure it's industry-leading in terms of functionality, safety, and user experience.'

Successful highlights

The highlight of the past year was undoubtedly announcing Anthony Joshua as an investor and ambassador for Monk. 'Securing someone of his calibre---both as a professional athlete and an influential figure---validated everything we've been building,' Laura says.

Real Deal Roasters

Emma Barrett

In the world of specialty coffee, Emma Barrett is making a name for herself with Real Deal Roasters. 'We take good quality raw coffee beans, hand-roast them in small quantities so they're always fresh, and send most of them out across the country to customers via our website,' she explains.

Emma's background

Emma grew up in the lovely seaside town of Deal in Kent. After moving back to Kent with her young family, she decided to start a business that fitted around her family life. Her love for coffee led her to start Real Deal Roasters, which has gained a sizeable following of loyal customers.

More about Real Deal Roasters

Real Deal Roasters is a family company that prides itself on its commitment to quality and customer service. 'We love our coffee, so we always strive to get each cup right,' Emma says. The company's mobile outlets at local markets have become a staple of the community.

Key challenges

Emma's biggest challenge was getting a toehold in local markets and with local cafes. 'It's a competitive sector, and generally, people are loathe to change coffee suppliers,' she admits.

Successful highlights

When Emma started at Deal Market, she wasn't even allowed to sell cups of coffee. But now, every Saturday morning, her regulars are sitting contentedly around her tables, and the queue for her coffees grows busier every week. 'I do feel happy that so many folk have made our coffee van an integral part of their weekend routine,' she says.

THE ORANGE BUFFALO

NICK WHITE

In the world of American-style food, NICK WHITE is making a name for himself with THE ORANGE BUFFALO. 'We make a selection of hot sauces, mainly as tossing / dipping sauces,' he explains.

NICK's background

NICK and his business partner grew up eating all kinds of American delicacies on holidays in the USA. When they realized buffalo wings weren't a thing in the UK, they set out to make their own sauces and start their business.

More about THE ORANGE BUFFALO

THE ORANGE BUFFALO single-handedly kick-started the Buffalo Wing culture in the UK back in 2011. 'Our sauces are unique to all the others out there,' NICK says. 'Thicker, Velvetier and more luxurious.'

Key challenges

NICK's biggest challenge was COVID-19 and the Russia / Ukraine war starting. 'Growing our restaurant sites became untenable,' he admits.

Successful highlights

NICK is proud of creating his very own range of tinned mackerel in hot sauce, winning a double award at the UK's first WING FEST, and starring in a Hollywood movie with none other than Bradley Cooper. 'It's been a wild ride,' he says.

La Locanda

Maurizio Bocchi

In the world of Italian cuisine, Maurizio Bocchi is making a name for himself with La Locanda. 'I am dedicated to serving handcrafted dishes of authentic flavours which respect the traditions of Italian cuisine, culture and heritage,' he explains.

'But I am equally proud that this recognition has brought and introduced us to new customers,' he says.

Folklore Yarns

Karen Gibney

In the world of artisanal yarns, Karen Gibney is making a name for herself with Folklore Yarns. 'We are committed to sourcing local, natural yarns,' she explains.

Karen's background

Karen grew up in Belfast and developed a passion for yarn and crochet. She started her own yarn shop, Folklore Yarns, which has become a staple of the community.

More about Folklore Yarns

Folklore Yarns specializes in high-quality, natural yarns. 'We believe natural fibres are far superior to man-made fibre, which have been proven to be damaging to the water system and are made of a form of plastic,' Karen says.

Key challenges

Karen's biggest challenge was COVID-19. 'The shop was closed for quite a long time,' she admits. But by posting daily and making home deliveries, Folklore Yarns was able to keep going.

Successful highlights

Karen is proud of creating her own ranges of yarn. 'We have worked hard to bring some of the most beautiful yarn,' she says. Folklore Yarns has become a go-to destination for yarn enthusiasts.

Final remarks

These founders demonstrate how thoughtful ideas can address real-world needs while creating meaningful connections with their communities.
