With a passion for supporting people with learning disabilities, Nick Walsh co-founded Nickel Support alongside Elena Nicola, a community interest company that provides innovative solutions for individuals with learning disabilities.
Growing up in South London, Nick developed a unique perspective on social entrepreneurship. His university degree in business computing gave him a solid understanding of business mechanics, which he applied to starting Nickel Support. 'I never want to work in computers!' Nick says, highlighting his desire to make a difference in the lives of people with learning disabilities.
Nickel Support works with adults with learning disabilities to help them find fulfillment and purpose in their lives. The company's three 'purpose pods'---employment, health, and relationships---provide a holistic approach to supporting individuals. 'We support the trainees to develop skills and find a balance in these three key areas,' Nick explains. The company's enterprises: homeware and gift shop, Interestingly Different; and cafe, Beans & Bloom, offer opportunities for trainees to develop their skills and gain employment.
Finding the right staff to deliver the company's vision has been a significant challenge for Nickel Support. 'We have had to take less of a hands-on approach as the organization has grown,' Nick says. To address this, the company has developed a robust recruitment process that includes a three-hour 'interview' with trainees.
Nickel Support has achieved numerous awards and recognition for its innovative approach. However, Nick's proudest moment is the impact the company has had on the individuals it supports. 'It is difficult to feel proud as there is always the next thing to do, or an issue to be fixed,' Nick says. 'But it is the impact and positive changes we have seen in the individuals we support that gives me the biggest pride.'
With a background in the British Army, Paul Blair co-founded ArcX Technology, a company that produces smart rings that offer hands-free control of connected devices.
Paul's experience in the British Army gave him the skills and discipline to start his own business. After leaving the army, he worked in various roles, including marketing and innovation director for a global manufacturing company. However, he soon realized that he was more suited to the fast-paced world of startups. 'I left the security of my corporate job in 2019 to start ArcX,' Paul says.
ArcX produces smart rings that can control music, sports cameras, and wireless speakers during exercise. The company's unique interchangeable tech module can be swapped between different size rings and handlebar mounts. 'We're all about offering control instead of just measuring and tracking biometric outputs,' Paul explains.
Keeping the business alive during the first two years was a significant challenge for ArcX. 'We came very close to folding the company,' Paul says. However, the company persevered and eventually launched its main product after three years of development.
ArcX has received numerous awards and media coverage since its launch. However, Paul's proudest achievement is the fact that the company was able to launch its product despite the challenges it faced. 'We've been humbled by the numerous awards and media coverage,' Paul says. 'But our biggest achievement has to be actually launching product in the first place from (literally) three years of blood, sweat, tears, and a ridiculously small budget.'
With a passion for fashion and a personal connection to the overlooked demographic of petite women, Chamiah Dewey founded DEWEY, a fashion brand that designs timeless, inclusive, and sustainable apparel for individuals 5ft and under.
Chamiah grew up in social housing in Hampshire and moved to London at 19 to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer. She studied at the London College of Fashion and started DEWEY during her third year of study. 'I have an in-built resilience that has served me well in business,' Chamiah says.
DEWEY creates ranges specifically tailored to complement and enhance the unique proportions of individuals who measure below average height. The company's proprietary size chart includes leg length and arm length options to ensure every body is covered. 'We're designed in London and sold direct-to-consumer both online and in-store,' Chamiah explains.
The biggest challenge DEWEY has faced is financial. 'Coming from the type of background I did, and starting the business as a 20-year-old student, meant that I didn't have years of corporate savings to support me,' Chamiah says. However, the company has persevered and is now fundraising for its pre-seed round.
DEWEY has achieved significant success, including launching in-store in the flagship Selfridges store on Bond Street, London. 'My most recent proud moment was when we launched in-store in the flagship Selfridges store on Bond Street, London,' Chamiah says. 'A store that I had once felt uncomfortable to even browse in because of the type of background I've had, to owning a brand on the shop floor, and having taken a concept to fruition in just 4 months to make it happen.'
With a passion for art and a desire to work for themselves, Sholto and Hugo Brown co-founded id-iom, a multi-media art company that creates contemporary art with a street and pop edge.
Sholto and Hugo are self-taught artists and brothers who grew up on the Isle of Man. They began their artistic journey in clothing and apparel before moving onto murals, paintings, and prints. 'We've always loved urban and comic book art,' Sholto says.
id-iom combines spray and stencil or paint and paper with other techniques to create unique artwork. 'We will never stop experimenting,' Sholto says. The company's style blends pop culture, music, books, and humor to create distinctive visual art.
One of the biggest challenges id-iom has faced is trying to make their voice heard over the overwhelming noise on social media. 'Being everything from your own photographer, model, editorial department, gallerist, curator, and so on is definitely more of a challenge than the relatively straightforward process of creating art,' Sholto says.
id-iom has achieved significant success, including being invited to festivals and working with celebrities and big brands. 'We've had our work shown internationally, been invited to festivals (both music and art - which is a nice bonus!), worked with celebrities & big brands and had a great time doing so!' Sholto says.
With a passion for art and a desire to create accessible and affordable art products, Eva Malley founded her eponymous company, which sells illustration and art products online.
Eva grew up in Brighton and moved to Bristol to pursue her passion for art. She started her business in 2018, selling tote bags to her friends. 'It was definitely more of a hobby at this time, and I didn't make much money,' Eva says. However, she soon gained a following on social media and was able to turn her hobby into a full-time business.
Eva's company sells illustration and art products online, including prints, badges, and other items. 'I'm very passionate about creating art that is accessible and affordable,' Eva says. Her work often takes inspiration from everyday life and emotions experienced during early adulthood.
One of the biggest challenges Eva has faced is managing her workload. '2020-2021 was insane in terms of orders,' Eva says. 'I was still studying at uni, so on my days off, I'd be packing 6am-midnight every day.' However, she has since learned to take things slower and mix up her work to keep things exciting.
Eva has achieved significant success, including being able to move out of her family's home and live in her favorite city, Bristol. 'Being able to move out of my family's home to my favorite city Bristol and live in a little one bed flat just creating every day is everything I've ever dreamed of,' Eva says.
These five entrepreneurs show how meaningful businesses come from addressing real needs and staying committed to what matters most. Nick Walsh at Nickel Support is creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities to find purpose and confidence in their lives. Paul Blair’s ArcX Technology simplifies how we interact with devices, proving that even small ideas—like a smart ring—can make a big difference. Chamiah Dewey’s fashion brand DEWEY focuses on inclusivity, giving petite women clothing that’s actually made with them in mind, which is long overdue. Sholto and Hugo Brown from id-iom remind us that art can thrive when you experiment and stay true to your style, even in a competitive world. Finally, Eva Malley’s accessible art is proof that creativity can be relatable and affordable without losing its meaning. These stories aren’t about trying to change the world all at once—they’re about making small, thoughtful contributions that improve lives and build connections. As Chamiah Dewey said, “Sustainability isn’t just about materials; it’s about creating something meaningful that lasts.” That’s something worth remembering in any line of work.
